There are many recent changes in regulation and others on the horizon that will impact on dynamic positioning (DP), andĀ for this reason, Ian Giddings, Technical Adviser (Marine) at the International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) will deliver a presentation āGuidance on the changes in regulation and legislation impacting on DPā at the fifth European Dynamic Positioning Conference being held in London on 20-21 June 2013.

The review of the Nautical Institute’s DP training andĀ certification schemeĀ has been continuing apace – as part of this process IDPOA has submitted a review of the models proposed, and of the future structure of the scheme.

The Nautical Institute scheme is under a full review until end March 2013 and there are many aspects of the training phases that are being discussed and considered by the working groups of representative organisations, including IDPOA. The likely outcome is that the NI Scheme will become the generic training for knowledge and operation of DP systems with ship/system type familiarisation training being the responsibility of the owner/charterer using the IMCA M117 guidance and OVID audit to ensure compliance/effectiveness. Ship Modelling & Simulation Centre AS has informed us that they will be conducting the worldās first exams for Dynamic Positioning Operators according to the new DNV scheme at their training center in Trondheim, Norway on Friday the 1st of March.

The ongoing reviews of DP Operators training and certification have seen two sets of new DPO Competency documents developed. One has emerged from the Nautical Institute, the other from Det Norske Veritas. IDPOA is working with both organisations to ensure that whichever scheme emerges as being preeminent in the industry, then DPOs will have had some input in the development.
